3/10:
Beat the Devil relies heavily on subtlety, so I've sat back to relax and enjoyed the treat.
The movie does feel like a cross between Casablanca and
The Maltese Falcon, yet there isn't a moment of clarity
in terms of where the story is heading. It can be annoying for some viewers, but I think it's well-paced and
interesting.
Acting-wise, Humphrey Bogart, as always, makes this special, and it's especially evident toward the end. John Huston is
still the master of noir storytelling. It's hard to go wrong with him.
All in all, Beat the Devil is strictly for fans of Humphrey Bogart, John Huston, and film noir.
