What the hell was Doris Day thinking when she agreed to do Caprice?
Look at these ridiculous outfits on her through the film. How many is that in all? It's the same crap that
Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren were doing during the 60's, and they all became jokes as a result. Doris Day,
who was 44 at the time, needs to look at herself in the mirror to realize how old-looking she is on top of
that stupid wig.
Admittedly, I watched this film because of Richard Harris. My goodness, it has to be the worst mistake of his
career, evincing absolutely zero chemistry with Doris Day. According to IMDb, "Richard Harris hated this film
so much that he reportedly never saw it. When he was once on a flight, he noticed that it was the in-flight
film, and he immediately got off the plane." At least, he'll redeem himself by appearing in
Camelot, A Man Called Horse,
and Cromwell within three years.
The story makes no sense. It has something to do with cosmetics and illegal drugs? Who cares!?!? How about the
fake location shooting in Europe? It was all done right in California. Doris Day skis on the Alps? Ha! What a
fraud. She only appeared in front of some background picture on a sound stage.
How about Doris Day flying away on the helicopter at night and landing on atop the Eiffel Tower during the day?
Earlier, she accidentally calls her co-star "Richard" (unless it's meant to be Richard III) and also steps
into the theatre playing this very same movie. I bet these seats were mostly unoccupied. "The spy who came in
from the cold cream"? Oh, please...get out of here!
All in all, Caprice did the most damage to Doris Day's career that she retired from making movies
altogether the following year.
