Crónicas (2004)

3/22: Spanish for Chronicles, Crónicas is an interesting Ecuadorian picture with a great twist at the end.

John Leguizamo proves himself to be a talented actor, and he should be doing Spanish-speaking movies more often. The cast is good as well with lots of raw third-world cinematography. But it's a story-driven film that's a mix of Network and Mad City which is set in Ecuador.

I knew from the beginning that Vinicio Cepeda was the guy that everybody was looking for. After he was sent to jail for an unrelated charge, he enlisted the help of an exploitative news reporter and subsequently turned the tables on him. That's when Crónicas started to gain respect from me as a different kind of picture.

All in all, the voters made a big mistake when Crónicas wasn't Oscar-nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.
