Dragonfly is Kevin Costner's strong acting versus Tom Shadyac's weak direction.
I don't like supernatural movies in general. This one manages to sail through almost convincingly. All I
have to do is stay with Kevin Costner who shows the same traits from
Field of Dreams,
Dances With Wolves, and
JFK. Overall, he's perfectly cast.
The story is interesting. I can understand the never-ending frustration of not reaching closure when one is
told that somebody is dead and he never saw it happen with his eyes. However, Kathy Bates is annoying
because she's like, "Yeah, yeah...she's everywhere in spirit, right? I feel it, too. All right,
whatever. Now, are you going to help me take out the trash?"
If there's a scene Tom Shadyac should've cut out, it's when the deceased male organ donor spoke to Kevin
Costner's character. Had he inserted more of the same throughout the film, it was going to be another
The Mothman Prophecies with shades of
The Sixth Sense. The final hour, especially when it takes place in
Venezuela, is the clincher to make the tale a satisfying whole.
All in all, Dragonfly works because of Kevin Costner.
