When I saw Baz Luhrmann's name as the director prior to starting Elvis, I had virtually zero hope.
The guy sucks because of his bombastic style. Of course, I was proven right literally a minute into the film
with the most fake cinematography ever. It's all about image. A good example is comparing between a big chunk
taken from Elvis: That's the Way It Is and what the Las Vegas
performance actually looked like.
If Hollywood wants to tell the true story of Elvis Presley's life, warts will have to be exposed. That
includes his drug use which began in the Army, the underage girls he was constantly sleeping with, the
unhealthy binge-eating habits he indulged in, his uncontrollable spending issues, and the sham relationship
he had with Priscilla Beaulieu, whose book Elvis and Me was totally debunked decades later, and how he
had been blackmailed into marrying her.
Who cares about Colonel Tom Parker? Just about every musician before the 70's got robbed by his manager. He can
be part of Elvis' story but not the central figure. Psst, Tom Hanks...lose the appalling accent, but you look
ready to do a biopic about LBJ. On the other hand, Elvis played a role in the civil rights movement? That's a
laugh! The script has no substance whatsoever. It's all floaty talk for an interminably long time. As for Austin
Butler, I don't see any Elvis in him but a girl. After the mid 70's, Elvis sure got fat, and the fraudulent
actor barely emulated the changes in his body.
All in all, Elvis is obnoxious, overblown, and chaotic bullshit of the highest order.
