4/25: They don't make movies like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial anymore.

No Oscar nomination for Henry Thomas? He made the movie, and E.T. took care of the rest. Drew Barrymore and Robert MacNaughton get extra points for making it memorable. I remember the 80's as the decade of E.T. with the dolls, Reese's Pieces, Atari game cartridges, and VHS tapes being all over the place. It was impossible to escape them. According to Wikipedia, "Mars refused to allow M&M's to be used in the film, believing that E.T. would frighten children." Talk about making the mistake of all time.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind kept popping into my head while watching the film. There's also The Day the Earth Stood Still with some of the same themes being played. However, the story is unique and can easily hit all people of any age. Two most famous moments are when Elliott and E.T. start to fly through the air on the BMX bike and be in front of the moon, hence the official logo of Amblin Entertainment. By the way, the famous kiss scene that Elliott had with the tanned girl at school is from The Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.

All in all, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, not Gandhi, is the rightful Best Picture winner of 1982.
