G.I. Jane isn't that terrible, but it has problems.
Not trying to sound misogynistic, the film comes off as somewhat too feminist for me although the performances are
fine. As Jordan O'Neill, Demi Moore is all right herself, but it's Viggo Mortensen who kicks ass yet he doesn't
get to do it enough which is disappointing.
Most of the plot is similar to Heartbreak Ridge, and the editing can be bad at
times, most especially in the last fifteen minutes. As G.I. Jane focuses on boot camp first, shifting attention
away from it as the film crosses over to politics is disastrous.
One of the biggest problems is the lack of character development via comradeship. Thus, I don't know who Jordan O'Neill's
comrades are. It was done better in An Officer and a Gentleman. On the
other hand, I like how "teamwork" is emphasized, and Urgayle makes the most out of it.
Meanwhile, as the film progresses and makes the transition from boot camp to some random battle in Libya, there's no
noticeable transformation in the faces and bodies. I'm surprised to see some of the soldiers smoking; really, how are they
considered healthy? I doubt they'll be able to run a mile under seven minutes, let alone six minutes.
All in all, G.I. Jane is a mix of good and bad.
