Independence Day (1983)

7/26: 1982 and 1983 proved to be the peak for David Keith, allowing him to start his career out strong.

Then, he disappeared and went on to take on nothing roles for the next four decades. That's too bad because he was an exceptional actor. The top three films of his oeuvre are An Officer and a Gentleman, Independence Day, and The Lords of Discipline.

Independence Day is as realistic as it gets. When Mary Ann said beating up women was common, I believed that. There wasn't much of protection for them back then when it came to spousal abuse. So, the subplot between Nancy and Les takes the cake which ends in a blowout. That being said, Dianne Wiest deserved an Oscar nomination.

Then, there's the rest of the cast giving terrific performances to fortify the drama. Of course, it's a "duh" decision for Jack to move to Los Angeles to be with Mary Ann. What else is there to do besides racing cars in Mercury? By the way, the film was shot on location in Anson and Merkel, Texas.

All in all, Independence Day is Best Picture material.
