One Hour Photo is a concept-driven picture.
In other words, anyone could've played Robin Williams' role, and the result would still be the same. All the
filmmakers have to do is change the theme, so it's photo development this time. Sy isn't a serial killer...at
least not yet, but he shows traits of becoming one. It depends on the kind of upbringing he has had.
If the movie stopped at the wall of photos and Sy didn't do anything else, the police would have nothing to
charge him with. Sure, what he did was unethical by making an extra copy of the photo prints, so this practice
got him fired which should be enough. But all bets were off by the time Sy showed up in the hotel room occupied
by Will and Maya.
The performances are nothing special. I give credit to Robin Williams for getting me through the show. It's
ironical that Gary Cole is the good guy who has to perform the hard task of firing Sy when he once played somebody
like him in a different movie called Indecent Seduction. By the way,
there's no such store as SavMart which is obviously a stand-in for Walmart.
All in all, Psycho was there first, and everything else that followed
such as One Hour Photo is basically a retread.
