There's no question that Harmony Korine is a rip-off artist.
Think I'm easily fooled when it comes to Spring Breakers? A radical update of
Spring Break, the first half is a desperate attempt to emulate Larry Clark
while the second half is all Belly. Go ahead and compare the last thirty minutes
with the beginning of the latter...it's exactly the same style. To confirm it,
Gummo, Harmony Korine's first directorial picture, was playing in the background
after the gang returned to one of their houses.
James Franco is the wild card. The four girls were sucking so bad on their own, and I couldn't even tell
their characters apart. By the time the actor showed up, the movie began to get better. I was thinking of '2'
prior to that only because I had seen The Real Cancun
and nothing could beat the awfulness of it. Harmony Korine can't be repeating the same scene of morons drinking
themselves to death and taking off their tops for so long. It doesn't make the show any better
or more meaningful unless his intention is T&A galore like it's the 80's.
Casting Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine in the lead roles is the biggest
mistake of Spring Breakers. If they aren't going to take off their clothes, be drunk like crazy, and have
sex with various men, what's the point? It's like talking about wanting to do gay stuff constantly but partake of
nothing much afterwards. In other words, they aren't true actresses who want to be challenged. The
following taken from IMDb punctuates what I mean:
"[Selena] Gomez was excited to do it because she was looking for a way to break into more mature roles and
get away from the Disney and other family projects she'd been doing. But the only way she'd take the role is
if she didn't have to perform nude."
Back to James Franco, he stole the movie when the limelight was on his character, explaining what he did for a
living. That's when I thought it was an Oscar-worthy performance. There was a campaign to drum up support
for James Franco, but I guess the voters didn't want to after seeing him show off his narcissism, especially
when he had a three-way sex with the remaining two girls.
According to Wikipedia, "critics and scholars have read deeper meaning in the plot, commenting on its
reflection of modern superficiality and the younger generation's self-destructive obsession with highly
stylized, disposable pop culture media and sensory ephemera." Uh............................don't make me
laugh. Are these people so fucking dumb?!? It's been like this for decades and can be found in lots and
lots of films and music videos.
All in all, Spring Breakers proves that Harmony Korine will never be on the same level as Larry Clark.
