The title is misleading as it should be The Constant Boredom.
That's why the Oscars lost credibility sometime in the 90's. It appears Rachel Weisz got hers by virtue of
flirting with men for about thirty minutes and flashing her tits. I couldn't imagine other rationale for
the bizarre win but felt happy when her character died early. Then again, 2005 was full of overrated films.
Anyway, I only selected this one for Ralph Fiennes' sake and got disappointed again. I know he's an excellent
actor, but why can't he appear in something that's normal for once with a coherent screenplay, still camera
work, and solid performances? It's like all I have from him are
Schindler's List, Quiz Show,
and Sunshine.
If I were the editor, I would discard like 90% of the content from The Constant Boredom. The story is
simple which can be plainly told in ten minutes. Justin Quayle is a weak idiot with too much time
on his hands for a British diplomat and should've been offed early on. Why he committed suicide at the end
despite barely knowing Tessa is quite silly. So is the constant need to show the landscape of Africa with
black Africans for props. That's so cliché, having been done before in thousands of films about Africa.
All in all, I can't believe I sat through 129 long minutes of The Constant Boredom.
