After finishing ER, I decided to check out previously unseen films
starring George Clooney, and the answer was The Peacemaker.
The first fifteen minutes is so boring that it's literally a sleep inducer. I was thinking, "Russians...stolen
nuclear weapons...an American intelligence agent...what is this: another 80's Cold War film?" How cliché. Oddly,
it's directed by Mimi Leder who isn't known for action films but
ER and other TV shows.
I also thought, "When the hell is George Clooney showing up?" Instead, I'm first treated with Nicole Kidman. I
hate her, and she's an overrated actress. It's like watching the Australian version of Jodie Foster come alive.
Finally, George Clooney appears. As a result, the movie becomes watchable although it's still long and bland.
In fact, he alone is enough, rendering Nicole Kidman unessential.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of dumb moments, ultimately causing me to downgrade my intended rating from
'5' to '4'. It all starts with Dušan Gavric bringing the nuclear bomb to New York City. That's it: he won.
Just set it off. Ironically, there's a shot of the Twin Towers in the background that would be brought down
several years later. How about George Clooney bouncing off the drop of eight warheads and then
standing up as if it's nothing?
By the way, if you see the soldier stopping the truck for inspection at the checkpoint, that's Goran Višnjic.
Ironically, two years later, he would replace George Clooney as one of the main stars for
ER.
All in all, George Clooney proves in The Peacemaker that he can carry a movie even though it's not
worth watching.
