Gotcha! is a combination of If Looks Could Kill and
Funeral in Berlin.
It's more of a semi-serious espionage picture than a comedy. The story works and is pretty much believable,
beating a lot of those bad spy pictures during the 60's. King Baggot deserves credit for making the film
easy to get into because of his lighthearted European cinematography.
Anthony Edwards is fine, doing what he can do, but that's the limit of his leading man capabilities. He's at
best a supporting actor. The next film will prove to be the biggest break of his career:
Top Gun. On the other hand, Linda Fiorentino is average as usual while
Nick Corri disappears rather quickly.
There isn't much of an oomph for Gotcha! to stand out more. That's why
If Looks Could Kill is a memorable spy spoof because of Richard
Grieco. Once his character landed in France, the movie simply took off. The other one takes a while to get
going, and when it does, the tone remains stubbornly low-key. Given everything that has happened, I'm never
shown what the precious roll of film actually contained.
All in all, in search of a perfectly acceptable 80's film with low expectations, Gotcha! will do.
