Wow, Sleepless in Seattle hasn't aged well.
I admittedly thought it was a good movie back then, ranking in the top five box-office-wise. However, after
watching for five minutes, I suddenly hated the writing. Plus, this is about well-do white people that's
made for well-do white people who live in a vacuum. Notice from time to time how several blacks are made to
be token.
Four characters have become quite detestable, and they are played by Meg Ryan, Ross Malinger (he's
such an expert, huh?), Rosie O'Donnell, and Gaby Hoffmann (I wanted to tell her, "Y.F.S.A.B.") The first two
make the show unbearable, but Meg Ryan wins the contest, no matter what, resulting in forced relationships.
Meg Ryan thinks she's cute, special, and adorable but is really not. That's why I try hard to stay
away from her films. Worst of all, she plays a creepy stalker named Annie who's so shallow that she has to
know first what Sam Baldwin looks like after all. Prior to requesting a photo, I was thinking, "What if the
guy turned out to be ugly and unattractive?"
While this was happening, I actually felt bad for Bill Pullman's character who got treated like a
chump. What did he do to deserve this? Sure, he got severe allergies...big deal. They'll be fixed in no time.
Ironically, Bill Pullman would go on to be the guy in Mr. Wrong several years
later. By the way, how about that Rob Reiner showing up given that he and his wife were recently murdered by
their son?
Regardless, I have to say Sleepless in Seattle has that classic feel mainly by being a well-shot
picture. At the same time, Tom Hanks is a big asset throughout and has plenty of witty lines. I just find
it hard to believe his story came out nationally, causing female listeners to fall for him through the radio,
yet none of them ever went after him like Annie.
All in all, thanks to Sleepless in Seattle, An Affair to Remember has been
spoiled, and I haven't seen it!
