A lot of realizations have been made while watching What's Up, Doc?
Peter Bogdanovich has terrible instincts, and the screwball genre is out of his league. Ryan O'Neal is a
downright awful actor while Barbra Streisand is completely overrated. They've managed to be successful in the
acting business by virtue of their looks. Madeline Kahn...when is she ever funny?
Everything in the film is forced just like the two guys bringing out a giant window pane so it can be
crashed through. There's no comedy at any point. Remember Jessica Walter in
Play Misty for Me? That's Barbra Streisand's
character in a nutshell: a creepy stalker who's intent in breaking up an incipient marriage. Worse, she's an
annoying JAP who unbelievably knows so many arcane words from the academic world of rocks and music.
However, I admit that one scene did work at the end. It's when Barbra Streisand said, "Love means never having to
say you're sorry," causing Ryan O'Neal to be perplexed, "That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."
Duh...it's why the über cheesy movie called Love Story sucked.
All in all, What's Up, Doc? is unfunny, dated, and chaotic crap.
